ELLIOTT BLOCK
I look for a unique view that defines the beauty, colors, rhythms and character of what my mind interprets from what my eyes see and try to capture and portray it. I find and show the obvious as well as hidden beauty in my surroundings. My art is only one genre; the beauty I see all around: birds, flowers, architecture, industrial equipment and a wide range of other items. I seek tangible architectural and engineering objects that were designed for utility and transform them into beautiful and meaningful art. The camera’s images are starting points that I transform into meaningful, expressive images; sometimes just the structure or geometric pattern and other times the combination of colors and shapes. I find an aspect of a structure that exhibits a distinctive characteristic; especially if it has been seen many times before in a more standard way. I photograph some component that might not be apparent to individuals who don’t separate the detail from the larger structure. I strive to find a part of the bird, flower, equipment or building that I can preserve in an image that may not be appreciated or even survive in its current surroundings. Frequently, the image is a close-up where a depiction of the detail provides a better appreciation of the unseen full structure. When I see what one might consider common, I look for a distinctive view. In summary, I attempt to convey the ineffable, transitory nature of beauty by capturing a fleeting mental view and converting it into a lasting image that incorporates the beauty I experience.
